2012 Boulder County Commissioner Race Has Begun

In a November 21, 2010 email, former Boulder Deputy Mayor and Council Member, Rich Lopez, formally announced his candidacy for the 2012 Boulder County Board of Commissioners Race. Lopez is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination to fill the seat being vacated by term-limited Commissioner Will Toor. Lopez is an extrememly well-qualified candidate and deserves broad community support. Read the full content of his announcement below. Leave a commment and let us know what you think of Rich’s run up to November 2012.

Dear Friends,
Yesterday, I informed the chair of the Boulder County Democratic Party of my intention to campaign for Boulder County Commissioner. Several months ago I met with Will Toor to let him know that I planned to campaign for his seat. Will is term-limited and the election is November, 2012 and the “run-up” begins now.
You know of my experience as a Boulder Council Member and Deputy Mayor. I have spent the last nine years working in areas that I believe provide the additional experience necessary to serve as our County Commissioner. I’ve served as the Board Chair of The Denver Foundation, the state’s largest community foundation supporting hundreds of nonprofit organizations in the region. Simultaneously, I’ve joined the Board of Directors of Boulder Community Hospital, which I now chair, governing Boulder’s community-based health care provider. You may have read about the Hospital’s bold ten year plan to consolidate acute care services at the Foothills branch of Boulder Community Hospital. We made this decision after more than a year of careful strategic planning.
Currently, I chair the Boulder Mountain Fire Relief Fund which will make grants to Boulder Mountain residents impacted by the Labor Day wildfires. I am a mountain resident who was impacted, but fortunately unharmed by the wildfires.
I believe I can bring a perspective to Boulder County Commissioner decision making and leadership that is unique and valuable. I have a desire to serve and want to be your Boulder County Commissioner.
In the days and weeks to come, I hope that you will support me in any way you can. Tell your friends to consider my candidacy. Support my campaign with your time and resources. And, most importantly, call or write to tell me what you think. Your voice is key to making thoughtful decisions for our county, and I’m ready to listen.

  1. Rich’s long standing committment to Boulder County makes him an ideal candidate for Commissioner.

  2. Jerry Curry says:

i am sure that Mr. Lopez is a qualified person to run for the County Commissioner seat but I would like to know if the Board of Directors has approved the support of BARA for MR. Lopez. If not, I would like to know approved this support. I would like to know if Mr. Lopez was questioned on his stand on the many real estate and property rights that Boulder County Commissioners have restricted or damaged in recent years

    • bararealtors says:

There has been no ‘support’ or ‘endorsement’ of Mr. Lopez by BARA. Saying that he ‘deserves broad community support’ is not an endorsement but an acknowledgement of his decades long public service. Rich has been a friend of real estate on many issues and regularly defends property rights at the podium and in court; including litigation against the City of Boulder and the County of Boulder. You can ask Rich any questions you may have at rvlopez@aol.com. Have a terrific Thanksgiving, Jerry.
